Periodontal Disease Management and Treatment

Non-Surgical Therapy

A “gummy smile” is used to describe an instance where teeth are covered with excess gum tissue resulting in a less esthetically pleasing smile. The procedure involves reshaping or recontouring the gum tissue and bone around the tooth in question to create a new gum-to–tooth relationship.

Before After

Surgical Therapy

If non-surgical treatments cannot reduce pocket depth, surgery may be needed. Surgery on gum and bone can reduce pocket depth and save a tooth or teeth. It also allows the dentist to remove tartar deep below the gumline. In some cases, pocket reduction surgery is combined with regenerative procedures. (Krames patient education) · Osseous Surgery/Pocket reduction · Periodontal Regeneration (Bone Grafts): The health of the bone that holds our teeth is often overlooked. It can be damaged or lost by tooth or gum disease, or even by the absence of a tooth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Symptoms can include red, swollen, or tender gums, bleeding while brushing or flossing, receding gums, loose or shifting teeth, persistent bad breath, and changes in the way your teeth fit together when you bite.
