Periodontal Disease: Management and Treatment

Non-Surgical Therapy

The goal of non-surgical therapy is to remove plaque, calculus (tartar), infection, and other causes of periodontal disease. Removal of these offending agents creates a positive oral environment that enables the mouth to heal.

Before After

Surgical Therapy

If non-surgical treatment cannot reduce pocket depth, surgical therapy may be needed. Surgical therapy reduces pocket depth and can save a tooth/teeth. It also allows for effective removal of tartar deep below the gumline that non-surgical therapy is not able to reach. In some cases, surgical therapy is combined with bone grafting procedures.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is an infection of the gums and bone that support the teeth, leading to inflammation, gum recession, bone loss, and potentially tooth loss if left untreated.

Symptoms can include red, swollen, or tender
gums; bleeding while brushing or flossing;
receding gums; loose or shifting teeth; persistent
bad breath; and changes in the way your teeth fit
together when you bite. However, some
individuals are not aware that they have
periodontal disease until it is brought to their
attention by a care provider.

Coverage for periodontal treatment can vary depending on your specific insurance plan. It's best to check with your insurance provider for details.
